It’s October so I get to make my wife watch horror movies like Prince of Darkness. I’ve seen it over a dozen times, but it’s always a fun movie. The music is fantastic. While the credits are going, the scenes in between them synchronized with the music make a great introduction. When the professor sees the homeless and then looks up at the sky, it’s great foreshadowing.
In the beginning, Doctor Loomis, I mean Father Loomis, gets sent by the Catholic church to the university where researchers are studying the growth of an unleashed force of evil. It is being birthed in a lab and is an actual substance and not a spiritual thing. Doctor Loomis, I mean Father Loomis, explains all of this early in the movie and it’s kind of a cool idea.
Oh, I forgot to mention the awesome first death of the movie where Alice Cooper impales one of the college kids from Revenge of the Nerds with a bicycle.
As the movie drones on, the professor gets more sinister and the hunk with a perfect mustache tries to be the hero, and even beds the smartest girl in the class, despite being a sexist. There are some cool kill scenes and lots of bugs.
The bugs make the movie. For example, there is an early scene where one of the homeless Satanic helpers groans to Doc, I mean Father Loomis, that she is happy they opened up the church again. She is holding a cup of maggots and leans down low to kiss the priest’s hand in a seductive manner that is strangely creepy. Great scene.
There are some great death scenes in the movie. My favorite is when the too cool for school frat guy screams ca-ca and the bugs come out, followed by the bag lady running with scissors. His hand ends up on the ground…with the bugs. But that’s not the end for ca-ca boy. He comes back later and speaks to the group as a bug zombie…and when his head falls off it’s too cool for school.
The biological substance that is pure evil is in the basement hooked up to the computers the whole time. When the dreams start, it is explained that the dreams will come to everyone in a certain proximity of the biological substance of pure evil that keeps growing in size. The dream is a slow camera scan of the church they are working in that results in a dark-cloaked figure that we guess is the Prince of Darkness all grown up.
I don’t want to give away the ending, but it’s a classic of apocalyptic catholic horror. The combination of science and religion in the movie is very interesting. I’ll leave you with a great quote from Doctor, I mean Father Loomis that is not about Michael Myers, but should be.
But he was OUR prisoner, not yours!
I love writing and drinking coffee. I’m also into skulls and stuff like that.
